Everyone responds to a cancer diagnosis differently. After treatment, many of us are left asking, “Now what?” Indy SurviveOars is a floating support group and so much more. While support is a huge component of our team, it is combined with fun physical activity in an upbeat, beautiful setting. It can be liberating to be outside in the fresh air, learning a new skill such as paddling, and gaining physical strength, all while building lasting relationships with other survivors. There is something therapeutic about being with other women who have “been in the same boat”. We laugh, we share stories, and most importantly, we understand. As we paddle in unison out into the water, it signifies where we have been, where we are going, what we have overcome, and what we can do together as a strong and united team.
Many of us are still dealing with the physical and emotional effects of our surgeries and treatments. It is empowering to gain strength, both mentally and physically, after the toll cancer has taken on our bodies. Paddling can help increase range of motion, decrease symptoms of lymphedema, break up scar tissue, and improve our mental wellbeing. There are so many positive effects this sport can have on breast cancer survivors. We can’t wait to see how dragon boat racing will impact YOU.
Indy SurviveOars welcomes breast cancer survivors of all ages, stages, and abilities. Please contact us at info@indysurviveoars.org for more information. We would love to tell you more about our team, when we practice, what to expect, and how to get started.
