I am Gloria, "Glo" to many.  I was diagnosed with breast cancer on my 48th birthday, October 2007. I had invasive ductal carcinoma. I found out 2 months later I was BRCA1 positive. I am also HER2+ I have had a lumpectomy, chemo, double mastectomy with expander's put in place, more chemo, then topped it off with a hysterectomy and implants. (NEW BOOBS!) I am so fortunate to have gotten where I am today.
I heard about IndySurviveOars through my friend Vikki, whom I will always be grateful. I joined July of 2008, 5 weeks after my last surgery. My first time on the boat had me. I knew I had found something 'for me'. It will not save all the other breast cancer survivors in the world, but it sure is nice that it has 'saved' a handful of them. My teammates are some of the best role models anyone could have. And I am at awe with what a bunch of women of such different ages and backgrounds can do with a dragon boat! And the support does over flow. A few weeks after joining, I was to attend my 30 year high school reunion. I was terribly upset with looking as I did, and my new teammates jumped right in with suggestions and support. I will remember that forever. Thank you.
I have never asked why me, I just always figured one of us kids would get it. There are 4 things that affect me today. #1 I still have neuropathy in my hands and feet #2 I have memory issues and have lost a large part of my humor #3 The affect this has had on my husband and 3 girls, especially the youngest and #4 .....oh poo, I forgot #4, but ask me tomorrow, I may remember then! I plan on having a lot of tomorrows!!!
